C Eliot Institute will abide by Naramata Conference Centre waterfront rules. (This includes no swimming after dark.) Swimming is authorized only in the designated swim area and only when supervised by a designated lifeguard. No swimming is authorized after dark.

C Anyone under 18 years of age using the swimming facilities must have a swim check and Eliot swim bracelet.

C Swim checks are given on Sunday during the first swim period. (Announce swim check times and ask for assistance at the orientation on Saturday night.)

C Anyone under 18 using the swimming facilities outside the operating times must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult who is willing to take responsibility for the welfare of the swimmer(s). The designated adult must be given his/her responsibility directly by the parent.

C Swimmers must stay within the roped swimming area.

C All swimming aids (including tubes and air mattresses) must stay within the marked swimming area.

C Non-swimmers (yellow stripers) must by accompanied by a parent or designated adult whenever at the waterfront.

C Parents of non-swimmers should be counseled to take care in the use of swimming aids. In case of wind, a child ca be blown away from the shallow area and be unable to paddle back without assistance.

C Anyone under 18 years of age using the swimming facilities must have a swim check and Eliot swim bracelet.

C Swim checks are given on Sunday during the first swim period. (Announce swim check times and ask for assistance at the orientation on Saturday night.)

C Boats must stay out of the swimming area.

C Supervised times at the waterfront (outside of the designated time) are at the discretion of the lifeguard.

C Roughhousing on the dock or around the swimming area is out.

C There will be a second or third Adult (volunteer) present at the swim dock to monitor the beach.

C This person will be responsible for check in and out of swimmers and ensure each swimmer has a swim buddy. It is advised to have a “Buddy Check” every half hour.

C Rules are to be posted at camp and waterfront

C HOURS: Swimming is supervised by an Eliot appointed lifeguard at the swimming beach from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. each day, and at other daylight times specifically designated and authorized by the Dean. Swimming at any other time or place is unauthorized and solely at the risk of the swimmers and their parents, guardians, or sponsors. SWIMMING IS NOT PERMITTED AFTER 11:00 P.M. QUIET TIME ON GROUNDS.

C Use of motorized water craft at Naramata Centre is not allowed.

C Campers who wish to bring non-motorized craft such as canoes, kayaks and sailboards may do so for their own use. Storage and use of such craft is at the camper’s own risk. Appropriate safety equipment (approved PFD’s) should be worn, and locks should be provided to guard against theft. CHILDREN AND YOUTH (PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 19) MAY NOT USE WATER CRAFT BELONGING TO, OR ACCOMPANY CAMPERS IN WATER CRAFT, WHO ARE NOT THEIR PARENT OR SPONSOR. (Persons under the age of 19 may accompany their own parent or sponsor in their own water craft, observing appropriate safety rules and solely at their own risk.) Bringing such personal water craft to Naramata Centre is not encouraged, because it fails to contribute to building a loving community experience.

C First Aid Horn Alert: Clearly state this to be used ONLY for “911" type emergencies.

C any camper should call 911 if hear

C ONLY campers trained in emergency or medical procedures should respond

C Horn requires ALL people to leave dock and water, except those responding to emergency

The Swim Kit And Challenge Stripes For Bracelets:

The Eliot Waterfront Kit should contain:

C About 70' of rope (soft, but suitable for welding)

C Two rolls of each major color

C A propane torch and gas for making bracelets

C Call horn to summon nurse. You may wish to demonstrate this at orientation

C Basic first aid supplies (for cuts and scrapes)

Some challenge stripes explained:

C Long Swim (to the projecting log and back)

C Lagoon Swim ( to the boat dock and back)

C Endurance in treading water (15 and 30 minutes - maximum) Under NO circumstances should a “Tread Badge” go beyond 30 minutes maximum!!!!

The thinner stripes are ganged on their respective “parent stripes” (e.g. long and lagoon swim stripes both go on the same blue short swim stripe - ditto for dives).
