Listening To the Heart of Winter: A
Circle of Trust® Experience

Winter is the season of deep listening. The most basic tenet of Courage and Renewal® is that every person has access to an inner source of truth, named in various wisdom traditions as identity, true self, heart, spirit or soul. If we are to maintain our personal well-being, social commitment, and individual integrity, we need to find a place that allows us to hear our own inner voice, to rediscover and cherish our sense of purpose, and to be discerning in our life choices.

Begin the new year, not with resolutions and to-do’s, but with mindful practices to reignite your inner compass and set your course for the year ahead.  Join us for a reflective experience of Circle of Trust® practices, drawing on approaches to deep listening and contemplation developed by Parker J. Palmer  and the Center for Courage and Renewal. We will create space to reconnect with our hearts in winter, to rediscover our capacity for whole-hearted living, and honour our relationship to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. Through personal reflection, dialogue and embodied presence, we can come to listen to our interconnections, what calls us, and what next steps await us.

The process:

Together, we will engage in large and small group conversations, drawing inspiration for these from poetry and writings and stories. We will share silence, solitude and reflective journaling, and hear tales from our own lives and work. You will discover principles and practices from our Circle of Trust® approach that can be applied to your daily life, communities and work, including developing receptive listening practices and the art of open and honest questioning.

Nancy Edmundson is a Courage and Renewal® Facilitator, prepared for formation facilitation with Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal in 2012. Nancy has participated in Circle of Trust®  work since 2008, and especially enjoys bringing Circles of Trust to interfaith, and UU communities and professional religious leaders.

Nancy served as a religious professional as the Director of Administration for the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara for 10 years. She has consulted with numerous congregations in a leadership development capacity and facilitated lay leadership development retreats since 1991. She served the Pacific Southwest District in a variety of roles since 1991, and currently serves as a UUA Western Region Transitions Coach. In 2012 she was honored with the Distinguished Service award to the Pacific South West District of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Nancy is mid-western born and raised and transplanted to Santa Barbara with her California-bred husband where they practiced Physical Therapy and raised their family. Nancy has worked in community organizing for alternative education in the areas of charter and homeschooling in California, and has been instrumental in the development of an interfaith countywide Warming Center program for unsheltered homeless in Santa Barbara County, California, and currently serves on the board of PFLAG Santa Barbara.

Kim Stokely has spent 20 years as a nonprofit leader coaching emerging nonprofits and community groups as they’ve formed, developed, and taken action. As founder and longtime Executive Director of Adopt-A-Watershed, Kim experienced the challenges of being a nonprofit leader for more than two decades. Now she nurtures other nonprofit leaders in their professional and personal lives so that they can bring the gifts of leadership to whole-hearted service for others and the world.

Kim has facilitated a variety of workshops and retreats for leaders, and was prepared for this particular work by the Center for Courage and Renewal. She is active as an executive and life coach, and many of her clients are nonprofit leaders. Kim is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz and holds a teaching credential from California State University, Chico.
